2nd generation biodiesel
Biodiesel Argent produces second-generation biodiesel, manufactured from waste oils and fats and in accordance with the European standard. Biodiesel Argent produces 125 million litres of biodiesel annually. The biodiesel produced is high-quality, has no impact on the environment, and has a favourable effect on engine performance.
Biodiesel Argent has conducted research into the greenhouse gas emissions across the entire lifecycle of FAME (fatty acid methyl esters) and conventional diesel used in the transportation sector. FAME emissions are more than 91.7% lower than those from conventional diesel. That makes FAME one of the most promising alternative fuels for the transportation sector.
The emission is calculated for the entire lifecycle, so it begins with collecting waste oils and fats and progresses through the production process to transportation to the filling station. For conventional diesel the lifecycle emissions are around 83.8 g CO2-eq/MJ while those for FAME are just 6.98 g CO2-eq/MJ.
Biodiesel Argent upcycles the waste oils and fats. Waste oils and fats are collected from more than 35,000 addresses. The waste oils and fats are collected in accordance with current legislation.
Waste oils and fats contain free fatty acids, which can be converted to biodiesel using methanol through esterification. The second important component of the raw material is glycerides, which can react to become biodiesel under basic conditions using potassium hydroxide in a process called trans-esterification. The product is then purified through distillation.
